What now?

By Seikholen Thomsong

The Bharatiya Janata Party's poster boy Mr Mahajan succumbed to injuries in a hospital in Mumbai. He was shot fatally by his younger brother. On his demise the media went all out devoting reams and reams of paper in writing about him. A new breed of Obituary writers came out with write-ups which the deceased would have been embarrassed to read had he been alive.

Naysayers spelt out doom for his party. No doubt, unlike the run of the mill BJP leader, Mahajan was pragmatic enough to underscore the importance of having friends beyond political boundaries and ideals. Also he was shrewd enough not to be seen as too much of a hindutva man unlike the way Advani had been. We could see a man who shrewdly planned his political career to someday occupy that chair in Delhi.

His loss was a setback to the moderate element within the party. Mahajan might not have believed in religious equality or say giving space to muslims or other minorities but he sure was practical enough to see that the BJP need to go beyond Hindutva as a political objective or even as a means to an end. While it is also true that he could as well go the extreme muslim bashing hindutva way in politics if such a need arises someday. Thus, Vajpayee the sole moderate face of the party would have felt so lonely on the demise of his protege.

Let us watch developments now.
